Psalm 90:4-12 “For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up. In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth. For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled. Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told. The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath. So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”

Knowledgeable of wisdom’s source, Moses sought out God; “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God” (James 1:5). Moses’ petition was, “teach us to number our days.” The word “number” means to weight out by implication to allot, to enumerate. Moses wanted to skillfully and wisely use the precious commodity known as time. There are at least three things Moses knew about “our days.” Our days are abbreviated, “In the morning it flourisheth . . . in the evening it is cut down” (vs.6). Time is short! Job gave this testimony of life, “My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle” (Job 7:6). Have you ever been guilty of saying, “where did the time go?” Life is short, spend it wisely! Our days are accountable, “Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance” (vs.8). The writer of Hebrews said, “as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). Paul said, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ” (II Corinthians 5:10). All men must give an account unto God for the manner in which they lived their days on earth. Our days are allotted, “The days of our years are threescore years and ten” (vs.10). Moses realized that he as well as all men had only a certain allotted time on this earth. Spend them wisely or spend them foolishly, but when they’re gone, there are no more! Wisdom living or wasteful living; the choice is yours!
