The Great Divide

John 3:27-36 “John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven. Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease. He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all. And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony. He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true. For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”

Text John 3:36 “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”

It is amazing how quickly we can become side tracked by many of life’s secondary affairs. The questions that the Jews were asking were an effort to encourage John to become preoccupied with the reputation of self and forget about the reign of the Saviour! Quickly discerning their tactics, John said, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (vs.30). There are a multitude of reasons that “He” must increase, but in verse 36, John magnifies one of the most important; “The Great Divide.” Everyone is divided into one of two groups and the point of division is Jesus. Every person on planet earth is either a recipient of eternal life or they at this very moment abide under the wrath of God! The word “wrath” means a violent passion that is justifiable which is revealed by judgment. This is an eternal truth not open for discussion. You are in one of these two groups and the thing that determines that is what you believe! The word “believeth” means to have faith, to credit by implying to entrust one’s spiritual well-being to Christ. Have you ever heard it said, “It’s not important what you believe so long as you believe?” That is a lie! Those that believe in self and all the good works they can accomplish will be punished in Hell forever and all that will in simple faith trust Jesus as their Savior have eternal life. Jesus is “The Great Divide!” Which side are you on?
